Teaching and research at Haus der Barmherzigkeit

Healthy ageing in focus

As life expectancy continues to increase, the importance of geriatrics (medical care for the elderly) and gerontology (the study of ageing and later life) is growing as well. To create a lasting impact, we engage in scientific research on ageing and share the knowledge we gain with students and practitioners in the fields of medicine, therapy, geriatric psychiatry, and nursing science.

Professorship of gerontology

The Professorship of Gerontology at the Medical University of Vienna, established in cooperation with Haus der Barmherzigkeit, further strengthened this long-standing partnership in 2026. The focus lies on research and teaching related to the challenges of an ageing society, with the aim to generate scientific knowledge on healthy ageing and to enhance applications in prevention, health promotion, and care for the elderly.

Teaching hospital of the MedUni Vienna – social competence

As part of a mandatory internship, first-year medical students gain practical experience in providing empathetic care to patients, particularly those with complex illnesses, people in the final stages of their lives, and individuals with severe disabilities. The internship is part of the social competence course at the Medical University of Vienna, which was developed jointly with Haus der Barmherzigkeit.
